He Spent 19 Years in Healthcare—Then Found His Passion in Code

Not every career path is straight. Sometimes, it takes a bold shift to discover what really excites you—and that’s exactly what happened for one man who spent nearly two decades in healthcare before finding his passion in tech.
Starting Out in Healthcare
His career began at just 18 years old in Italy, working as an ambulance technician. Driven by a passion for helping others, he went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in adult nursing. After qualifying, he made the move to the UK, where he worked as an intensive care nurse in the NHS. It was a role that demanded skill, focus, and compassion.
The Turning Point
After 19 years in healthcare, he started to think about the future. With many working years still ahead, he realised he wanted something different. That shift came unexpectedly—he was working on a side project and needed a website. While learning how to build it, he discovered web development.
That was the spark.
What began as a simple task quickly grew into a strong interest. The more he learned, the more he wanted to turn it into a full-time career.
Making the Switch
He enrolled in a full-time, 8-month coding course at a tech academy. The program gave him the technical skills and confidence he needed to take the next step. From HTML and CSS to JavaScript and backend development, he built a solid foundation.
Life as a Software Developer
Today, he works as a full-time software developer. The job is challenging, but he finds it rewarding and motivating. He’s surrounded by supportive teammates who encourage growth and learning.
Looking ahead, he hopes to step into a more senior role and mentor other new developers—just like he once was.
💬 His Message to Others
Changing careers can feel risky, especially after spending years in a completely different field. But his story proves that it’s never too late to follow a new interest, gain new skills, and start again with confidence.
Thinking about a career change? Whether you’re in healthcare, education, or another industry, there’s space for you in your desired space. You just have to take the first step.
